Si dice che Rin Tin Tin fosse stato trovato da un soldato statunitense di nome Lee Duncan in un canile bombardato in Lorena, poco prima della fine della Prima guerra mondiale. Tornato a Los Angeles, Lee addestrò Rin Tin Tin (ribattezzato "Rinty") a saltare ed esibirsi in diversi trucchi, e fu casualmente notato da un produttore cinematografico di nome Darryl F. Zanuck. Rin Tin Tin divenne così un cane-attore, interpretando numerosi film, a partire da Where The North Begins (1923), con la stella del muto Claire Adams.
I discendenti di Rin Tin Tin furono anch'essi addestrati da Duncan o dai suoi successori, e vennero a formare una vera e propria dinastia di star, con ruoli televisivi e cinematografici.
