"An aging hoodlum wants to turn over a new leaf and decides to invest in a tea-house. However, when the tea-house stands in the way of a development project supported by a rival gang, he must call upon his old gang friends to save his tea-house."

Possibly one of the most misleading DVD covers I've ever seen, Gangster Payday is sold as hearkening back to the heyday of Hong Kong gangster cinema, but shares more in common with a gentle comedy drama like The Full Monty than it does with A Better Tomorrow.
There's no action here, just great performances from leads Anthony Wong, Charlene Choi and Wong Yau Nam, working from a great script and assured direction.

The movie teeters on the edge of schmaltz occasionally but director Lee Po-cheung knows when to reign things in. The movie is yet further proof that Anthony Wong is one of the Hong Kong, if not the world's greatest living actors, and he, like this little seen gem, probably deserves more recognition.
