HANNAH ARENDT (1906–1975) was a German and American historian and philosopher, and one of the most influential political theorists of the twentieth century. Fleeing Nazi Germany in 1933, her lived experience of statelessness profoundly shaped her intellectual inquiry into power, authority, and the nature of totalitarian rule. Rejecting the label of "philosopher," she preferred to describe her work as political theory because it focused on the active sphere of human affairs rather than abstract metaphysics. Her unique insights, blending historical analysis with existential phenomenology, continue to provide a vital framework for analyzing modern political crises and the erosion of democratic institutions.

Her breakthrough came with THE ORIGINS OF TOTALITARIANISM (1951), a monumental analysis that traced how Nazism and Stalinism emerged from the breakdown of European nation-states, antisemitism, and imperialism. Prior to this major success, her early academic foundation was established in Germany with her doctoral thesis, published as LOVE AND SAINT AUGUSTINE (1929). She also spent years during her exile compiling a biographical critique of Jewish integration and historical consciousness, which was later published as RAHEL VARNHAGEN: THE LIFE OF A JEWISH WOMAN (1957).

Arendt shifted her focus from historical tyranny to positive human capacity in THE HUMAN CONDITION (1958), where she distinguished between labor, work, and action to argue for the supreme importance of public political life. She deepened these theoretical foundations in BETWEEN PAST AND FUTURE (1961), a collection of exercises exploring the erosion of traditional political concepts like freedom, authority, and truth. Her most controversial book, EICHMANN IN JERUSALEM: A REPORT ON THE BANALITY OF EVIL (1963), arose from her coverage of the Adolf Eichmann trial for The New Yorker magazine. The text famously argued that historical evils can be perpetrated by ordinary, unthinking bureaucrats rather than fanatical monsters, and caused a deep controversy in Jewish circles for its sharp criticism of the way the trial was conducted as well as Arendt's critical perspective on the actions of some Jewish leaders during the Holocaust.

She examined the structural nature of political change in ON REVOLUTION (1963), comparing the American and French revolutions to advocate for localized, grassroots citizen participation. A number of important essays appeared during the 1960s and early 1970s, including MEN IN DARK TIMES (1968), a series of intellectual biographies of some creative and moral figures of the twentieth century, such as Walter Benjamin, Karl Jaspers, Rosa Luxemburg, Hermann Broch, and Isak Dinesen. As civil unrest grew globally, she published ON VIOLENCE (1970) to sharply distinguish brute force from legitimate, collective political power. Her final years were dedicated to a massive, systematic philosophical project investigating the internal operations of the human mind. This project culminated in the posthumously published, multi-volume treatise THE LIFE OF THE MIND (1978), which explored the distinct faculties of thinking, willing, and judging.

Beyond her formal treatises, Arendt’s extensive epistolary records offer an intimate window into her life, relationships, and evolving thoughts. Her deepest intellectual and personal bond is preserved in the Hannah Arendt / Karl Jaspers CORRESPONDENCE 1926–1969 (1993), which tracks her evolution from a young doctoral student into an equal intellectual peer. For pure literary and political dialogue, BETWEEN FRIENDS (1995) captures a vibrant twenty-five-year friendship with Mary McCarthy illed with intellectual debates and personal warmth. Her complex, lifelong relationship with her former mentor Martin Heidegger is detailed in LETTERS, 1925–1975 (2003), exposing the profound tensions and deep philosophical overlaps between the two thinkers. Finally, THE CORRESPONDENCE OF HANNAH ARENDT AND GERSHOM SCHOLEM (2017) tracks a critical dialogue on Jewish identity, Zionism, and postwar reconstruction that eventually fractured over her controversial thesis on the banality of evil.
