* Geoffrey Chaucer - Collected Works, incl. The Canterbury Tales (21 books)
GEOFFREY CHAUCER (c. 1343–1400) , widely regarded as the "Father of English Literature," was the most influential English poet and writer of the Middle Ages. His magnum opus, THE CANTERBURY TALES , is revered as one of the paramount works of English literature. Writing during a turbulent period marked by the Black Death and the Peasants' Revolt, Chaucer revolutionized vernacular literature by choosing to write in Middle English at a time when the court and elite classes primarily utilized Anglo-Norman French or Latin.
Before composing his final masterpieces, Chaucer honed his craft through distinct literary phases heavily influenced by continental traditions. His early career was dominated by the French courtly style, characterized by dream visions and allegorical love poetry , as seen in "The Book of the Duchess", "The House Of Fame", "The Parliament of Fools", and "The Legend of Good Women", all of which are translated by Barry Stone in LOVE VISIONS (1983). Later, during his "Italian period", Chaucer encountered the works of Dante, Petrarch, and Boccaccio. This exposure transformed his narrative technique and lead to the creation of TROILUS AND CRISEYDE , a sweeping psychological epic poem that re-tells the tragic story of the eponymous lovers set against a backdrop of the Trojan War. Many Chaucer scholars consider it his finest technical achievement in verse, showcasing a profound understanding of human emotion, courtly love, and tragic irony.
Chaucer’s crowning glory is THE CANTERBURY TALES , an ambitious, unfinished masterpiece that serves as a vibrant kaleidoscope of late medieval life. The Tales are an anthology of twenty-four short stories written in Middle English between 1387 and 1400. They are mostly in verse, and are presented as part of a fictional storytelling contest held by a group of pilgrims travelling from London to Canterbury in order to visit the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral. To pass the time, the pilgrims engage in a storytelling contest. Through this brilliant literary device, Chaucer brings together characters from all walks of life—including a noble Knight, a worldly Wife of Bath, a corrupt Pardoner, and a coarse Miller—allowing their competing voices and distinct social perspectives to clash and complement one another in an unprecedented display of narrative diversity.
