Description:
A surreal masterpiece from avant-garde legend Shūji Terayama.
Blending autobiography, dream logic, and experimental filmmaking, Pastoral: To Die in the Country (also known as Pastoral Hide and Seek) follows a sensitive teenage boy growing up in a superstitious rural village in Aomori Prefecture. Dominated by his overbearing mother and trapped in a world of ancestral ghosts and provincial repression, he yearns to escape to Tokyo. But this is no ordinary coming-of-age tale.
Midway through, the film brilliantly breaks the fourth wall, revealing itself as an unfinished autobiographical project by the adult director. A stand-in for Terayama himself. What follows is a profound meditation on memory, nostalgia, trauma, and the unreliable nature of personal history.
Visually stunning, theatrical, poetic, and deeply unsettling, this film features carnivalesque imagery, striking cinematography, and a haunting psychedelic rock score. One of the most unique and influential works of Japanese underground cinema from the Art Theater Guild era.
