One of the best-known and most important works of the British New Wave, the movement of renewal that swept through British cinema in the early 1960s, following in the footsteps of the French Nouvelle Vague. The then-nearly-debutant John Schlesinger tells the story of an emblematic character: a young man, as ambitious as he is often unrealistic, who systematically uses lies as an outlet and a reaction to the constraints of a social environment in which everything seems predetermined.
