* Frantz Fanon - Collected Works, incl. The Wretched of the Earth (9 books)
FRANTZ FANON (1925–1961) was a Martinique-born Afro-French psychiatrist, philosopher, and writer who remains one of the most influential theorists of anti-colonialism, revolutionary violence, and the psychology of oppression. In the course of his work as a physician and psychiatrist, Fanon supported the Algerian War of independence from France and was a member of the National Liberation Front (FLN). His clinical work deeply informed his structural critique of racism, leading him to analyze how colonial domination fractures the human psyche.
His first major work, BLACK SKIN, WHITE MASKS (1952), analyzes the devastating psychological impact of racism and colonial subjection on Black individuals. Drawing on psychoanalysis, existential philosophy, and his own lived experiences, Fanon argues that colonialism forces the colonized person to wear a psychological "white mask" in a futile attempt to achieve human recognition within a racist system. Fanon demonstrates that racism is not merely a collection of personal prejudices, but a deeply embedded social neurosis that requires total systemic change to cure.
Fanon continued his institutional critique in A DYING COLONIALISM (1959). This book offers a real-time sociology of the Algerian revolution, documenting how a colonized populace undergoes radical cultural and psychological transformations during an armed struggle for liberation. Fanon analyzes how traditional cultural elements—such as the veil, the radio, and family structures—were dynamically reshaped and utilized as tools of resistance against French imperialism. He shifts the view of the colonized from passive victims of history to active, conscious agents of their own destiny, illustrating how the collective fight for freedom births a new, unified national consciousness.
His final and most famous work, THE WRETCHED OF THE EARTH (1961), became a definitive handbook for global decolonization and revolutionary struggle. Published shortly before his death, the book famously analyzes the role of violence as a cleansing force that frees the native from their inferiority complex and restores their self-respect. Fanon warns against the pitfalls of the post-colonial national bourgeoisie, predicting that without a radical restructuring of society, newly independent nations would simply replace European masters with local elites. He closes the work with a poignant critique of European humanism and a passionate call for the global South to invent a new human being independent of Western paradigms.
Posthumously, Fanon’s scattered political essays, editorials, and clinical notes were compiled in TOWARDS THE AFRICAN REVOLUTION (1964). This collection traces his intellectual evolution from his early psychiatric critiques to his absolute commitment to Pan-African liberation, and outline Fanon's fierce solidarity with liberation struggles across the African continent. Together with his lectures and clinical papers published decades later in ALIENATION AND FREEDOM (2015), these writings solidify Fanon's legacy as a brilliant clinician and a revolutionary strategist whose diagnoses of the colonial condition remain strikingly relevant today.
