Synopsis
Discovery Channel is setting out on a real-life treasure hunt in the new local production, Outback Opal Hunters. Heading to Lightning Ridge (NSW), Opalton (QLD), and opal mecca, Coober Pedy (SA), the series follows crews of fearless opal miners on their mission to unearth a fortune in some of Australia's harshest and remote landscapes.
The stakes are real as these crews risk it all in their quest to strike it rich. Outback Opal Hunters is a rollercoaster of hope and heartbreak as we delve deep inside the world of opal mining to find out just what it is that has our crews hooked on the hunt.
Australia produces more than 90% of the world's opals. Hidden beneath outback desert plains lies a hidden bounty, 30 million years in the making, waiting to be discovered. Opals are one of the most valuable gemstones on the planet - one stone alone can fetch a million dollars - and it's the dream of striking it rich that drives these crews to push their bodies and bank accounts to breaking point.
Episode 1: Pegged in and Pinned Down
The Mooka Boys may crack the rock at their mine site, the Bushmen face a hostile neighbour and the Blacklighters are open-cut mining at Servo Claim.
Episode 2: Rags to Riches
Opalton Boulder Crew have found a new source of opal, Mooka Boys are gambling on a rented digger and Slim Pickings are trying to earn moving money.
Episode 3: Gold Coast Gamble
Opal Whisperers have sold opal before they've found it, Bushmen are facing mechanical troubles and Opalton Boulder Crew have two struggling mines.
Episode 4: Dead in the Water
The Cheals battle floods and their worst start in years, the Whisperers chase Yowah nuts, and Slim Pickings race to move before their luck runs out.
Episode 5: Crabology 101
The Blacklighters call in an expert on a rare fossil, the Mooka Boys build a wash plant, and ageing machines threaten to end the Bushmen's season.
Episode 6: Bomb's Away
The Opal Whisperers are in Coober Pedy to get opal for their buyer, the Cheals must get their agitator running, and the Blacklighters are a man down.
Episode 7: Powered Up
Slim Pickings have staked a new claim, the Bushmen have a new powerpack, and the Misfits are working alone for the first time.
