Synopsis:
In 1938, a beautiful Swiss governess, Elisabeth Laurier (Sophie Marceau), makes a secret pact with an aristocratic English landowner, Charles Godwin (Stephen Dillane), to bear his child in order to pay off her father's crippling debts. According to the strict contract, they meet in dark hotel rooms lit only by firelight, and she must forfeit all maternal rights upon the child's birth. Seven years later, driven by an unyielding motherly bond, Elisabeth manages to get hired as a governess to a wildly spoiled and undisciplined girl on a remote, snow-covered English estate—only to discover that the child is her long-lost biological daughter, and her employer is her mysterious lover from the past.
