Before reading The River as a statement on gay life in Greater China, it may be useful to look at it more closely as a metaphor for the postmodern condition generally and as an allegory for Taiwan as a political entity. Although associated with sexuality, yin /femininity, and the sex industry in Chinese thought, water, an important destructive and unifying element in all of Tsai’s films, also evokes a more specifically ethnic incarnation of the
flow of the Chinese “life force” in The River . Thus, the title of the film itself conjures the “pure” ethnic roots of the Han Chinese in the Yellow River valley, with its transmutation into the polluted Tanshui River as a sign of the decline of civilization generally and Chinese society specifically. The water offers less of a hope for renewal through flow and movement and more of a promise of destruction through either stagnation or flooding. Although
Taipei’s shopping malls, department-store exteriors, hotel rooms, and other transnational commercial spaces like McDonald’s restaurants offer the concretization of a modernist dream of uniform material prosperity and capitalist bliss, the “heart” of Taipei, as represented by the apartments inhabited by most of the city’s population, is in ruin. Demolished buildings, construction debris, and industrial trash mar the landscape, and the family home is not only cramped and drab but also plagued by substandard plumbing. After calling in a repairman and knocking at the door of the upstairs flat assumed to be the source of the leak, Hsiao Kang’s father has so little hope of eliminating the problem that he scavenges for bits of discarded roofing and PVC pipe to redirect the water he sees as an unavoidable intrusion into his bedroom. As the water threatens to wash away the home, the dysfunctional family itself serves as a metaphor for a more general social crisis involving the decline of interpersonal communication, the atomization of the individual, the isolation of the nuclear family, the malaise associated with what Herbert Marcuse has called “repressive desublimation” of sexuality, and a host of other ills linked to the uncertainty of living in a contemporary metropolis like Taipei, or, more specifically, within a powerhouse economic entity like Taiwan that has next to no “official” political standing in the world polity. Repressive desublimation is a cultural and sociological concept coined by the philosopher Herbert Marcuse in his 1964 book, One-Dimensional Man. It describes how advanced capitalist societies allow for the release of rebellious, taboo, or instinctual desires, but only by commercializing them, ultimately neutralizing their ability to challenge the status quo.
