Arriving at a time when soundtracks were almost as important as (and, in this case, better than) the movies they accompanied, Spawn: The Album took the hybrid model set by 1993's rap/rock merger Judgment Night and amplified the chaos and critical brow-furrowing with a rock-meets-electronic free-for-all. For fans of a certain disposition, this was a hit; for purists, this experiment was almost as abhorred as the namesake film. Regardless, there's no doubting the star power attached to this project.
A pair of singles helped the album surge on the U.S. charts, peaking at number seven and going gold: post-industrial ragers Filter teamed with electronica duo the Crystal Method for the enduring alterna-hit "(Can't You) Trip Like I Do" -- extending the former band's string of late-'90s compilation successes alongside soundtracks for The X-Files: Fight the Future and The Crow: City of Angels -- and Marilyn Manson, at peak notoriety and popularity, made a contentious pairing with U.K. trip-hoppers Sneaker Pimps for "Long Hard Road Out of Hell."
Elsewhere, previously issued classics were reworked, like on the Metallica double-header that found Kirk Hammett adding some riffs to Orbital's "Satan" and DJ Spooky skittering the hell out of "For Whom the Bell Tolls." Korn, Stabbing Westward, Silverchair, Incubus, and Slayer meet their matches with the Dust Brothers, Josh Wink, Vitro, DJ Greyboy, and Atari Teenage Riot, just as Goldie, the Prodigy, Moby, and Roni Size do their best with Henry Rollins, Tom Morello, Butthole Surfers, and Soul Coughing.
Some of these bold pairings might look absolutely crazy (and not all of them necessarily work), but it's both a time capsule and a strangely prescient look at a genre-less future. (AMG)
