Trama:
Tre storie separate ma parallele della crisi immobiliare ipotecaria statunitense del 2015 Nel 2005, Michael Burry, un eccentrico ex medico diventato gestore di un hedge fund con un occhio solo per la Scion Capital, ha scambiato il tradizionale abbigliamento da ufficio con pantaloncini, piedi nudi e un taglio di capelli alla Supercuts. È convinto che il mercato immobiliare statunitense sia costruito su una bolla destinata a scoppiare entro pochi anni. L'autonomia di cui gode all'interno dell'azienda gli permette di fare sostanzialmente ciò che vuole, quindi Burry decide di scommettere contro il mercato immobiliare con le banche, che sono più che felici di accettare la sua proposta, qualcosa di mai visto prima nella storia americana. Le banche credono che Burry sia un pazzo e sono quindi fiduciose di aggiudicarsi l'affare. Jared Vennett della Deutsche Bank viene a sapere delle attività di Burry e, in quanto investitore, crede di poter trarre profitto anche lui dalle sue convinzioni. Una telefonata accidentale alla FrontPoint Partners fa sì che queste informazioni giungano nelle mani di Mark Baum, un idealista stufo della corruzione nel settore finanziario. Baum e i suoi soci, che lavorano a distanza per Morgan Stanley, decidono di unire le forze con Vennett pur non fidandosi completamente di lui. Oltre alle informazioni di Burry, credono anche che la maggior parte dei mutui siano sopravvalutati dalle agenzie di rating, con le banche che raggruppano tutti i mutui subprime sotto pacchetti AAA. Charlie Geller e Jamie Shipley, che sono soci di minoranza in una start-up da 30 milioni di dollari chiamata Brownfield, entrano in possesso del prospetto informativo di Vennett sull'argomento. Volendo partecipare all'operazione ma non avendo l'influenza necessaria, decidono di chiamare un vecchio "amico", il banchiere d'investimento in pensione Ben Rickert, per chiedere aiuto. Tutti e tre i gruppi partono dal presupposto che le banche siano incompetenti e non sappiano cosa sta succedendo, mentre per vincere loro, l'economia in generale deve perdere, il che significa che a soffrire sarà l'investitore medio che si fida delle istituzioni finanziarie. Quest'ultimo aspetto potrebbe non piacere a Baum. Alcune di queste ipotesi potrebbero essere errate e molto più manipolative di quanto avessero mai immaginato, il che a sua volta potrebbe complicare il processo.
