* Jim Morrison [The Doors] - Collected Works and Lyrics (6 books)
JAMES DOUGLAS MORRISON (1943–1971) was an American singer-songwriter and poet who was the lead vocalist and primary lyricist of the rock band The Doors . Due to his charismatic persona, poetic lyrics, distinctive voice, and unpredictable performances, along with the dramatic circumstances surrounding his life and early death, Morrison is regarded by music critics and fans as one of the most influential frontmen in rock history. Since his death, his fame has endured as one of popular culture's top rebellious and oft-displayed icons, representing the generation gap and youth counterculture.
While best known for his intense baritone voice and stage presence, Morrison considered himself a poet first and a singer second. His work blended cinematic imagery, psychedelic rebellion, and dark, existential themes of sex and death. A voracious reader from an early age, he was drawn to the study of literature, poetry, religion, philosophy and psychology, among other fields. He was particularly inspired by the writings of a number of philosophers and poets, notably including Friedrich Nietzsche, the French existentialists, the Beat Generation, and the Symbolist poet Arthur Rimbaud, whose style would later influence the form of Morrison's short prose poems.
During his lifetime, Morrison self-published small poetry volumes, including THE LORDS/NOTES ON VISION (1969), a series of brief, aphoristic observations on the nature of film and the voyeuristic quality of modern life, and THE NEW CREATURES (1969), which leans into more surreal, haunting imagery. These were followed by AN AMERICAN PRAYER (1970), a limited-edition pamphlet of poetry that served as the basis for his famous spoken-word recordings. These works showcased his "poetry of the damned," featuring raw, intensely visual poetry focusing on media, celebrity, and the dark underbelly of American culture, and cemented his status as a published author beyond the realm of lyric sheets.
After his untimely death in 1971, his estate released further collections that showcased the sheer volume of his private journals. WILDERNESS (1988) and THE AMERICAN NIGHT (1990), published posthumously, revealed a more vulnerable and experimental side of the artist. These collections include everything from polished poems to fragmented "lost" recordings and sketches, providing a comprehensive look at a man who spent his final days in Paris attempting to shed his rock-and-roll skin in favor of a full-time literary life. THE COLLECTED WORKS OF JIM MORRISON (2021) is a definitive anthology containing rare photographs and numerous handwritten excerpts of unpublished and published poetry and lyrics from his 28 privately held notebooks.
