The documentary, produced in 1985 by Irmgard von zur Mühlen to mark the 40th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, features original footage shot by Soviet cameramen upon the arrival of the First Ukrainian Front on January 27, 1945, at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp complex in Poland.

The Red Army, which had been aware of Auschwitz’s existence since 1943 and had discovered the horrors of Majdanek in July 1944, found upon its arrival 600 bodies lying in the snow—prisoners killed by the SS during the evacuation of the complex—and approximately 7,000 inmates who were completely exhausted, emaciated, and on the verge of death. Although the Nazis had abandoned Auschwitz on January 17, destroying archives and blowing up the crematoria and gas chambers, unequivocal and abundant evidence of the atrocities committed remained, including the gassing of nearly one million Jews, which also served to indict certain Nazi officials at the Nuremberg trials.

The documentary includes an interview conducted with Captain Aleksandr Voronsov, who, along with other Soviet and Polish cameramen, filmed those scenes for six weeks, between February 7 and March 1945, in an effort to document the scale of the crimes perpetrated by the Nazis.
