* Albert Camus - Nobel Prize in Literature, 1957 (47 books)

ALBERT CAMUS (1913–1960)
was a French-Algerian author, journalist, and philosopher whose work explored the human condition in an inherently meaningless, or "absurd," universe. Though often grouped with existentialists, he disavowed the label, preferring to focus on a philosophy of absurdism and later, revolt. He gained international fame as a leading intellectual of the mid-20th century, becoming the first laureate born in Africa to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1957 "for his important literary production, which with clear-sighted earnestness illuminates the problems of the human conscience in our times."

Camus's fiction, which he described as philosophical "tales," serves as the primary vehicle for his ideas. His breakthrough novel, THE STRANGER or THE OUTSIDER (1942), follows the detached, alienated Meursault, embodying the absurdity of life. He followed this with THE PLAGUE (1947), an allegorical account of a pandemic in Oran, which serves as a parable for the Nazi occupation and human solidarity against suffering. His last completed novel, THE FALL (1956), is a complex confessional monologue exploring guilt and judgment.

Camus's nonfiction provides the intellectual framework for his creative works, articulating his philosophies of absurdity and revolt. The crucial essay THE MYTH OF SISYPHUS (1942) famously posits that the struggle against an indifferent universe itself is enough to fill a man's heart, concluding with the idea that one must imagine Sisyphus happy. In THE REBEL (1951), he explored the morality of rebellion, arguing against the justification of murder in politics, a work that famously caused a rift with Jean-Paul Sartre. RESISTANCE, REBELLION, AND DEATH (1960) is a posthumous collection of Camus’s most powerful political essays and speeches that articulate his unwavering commitment to human dignity, moral clarity, and the artist's duty to speak for the victims of history against all forms of totalitarianism.

Camus was also deeply involved in the theater, both as an actor and playwright, viewing the stage as a direct way to communicate philosophical ideas. His plays explore themes of tyranny, logic, and human rebellion through both original works and adaptations. His principal original plays include CALIGULA (1944), THE MISUNDERSTANDING (1944), STATE OF SIEGE (1948), and THE JUST ASSASSINS (1949). Later in his career, he turned to stage adaptations of major literary works, such as William Faulkner's REQUIEM FOR A NUN (1956) and Fyodor Dostoevsky's THE POSSESSED (1959).

The posthumous, unfinished autobiography THE FIRST MAN (1994) offers a raw look at his Algerian childhood, while his NOTEBOOKS—published in three volumes as NOTEBOOKS 1935–1942 (1962), NOTEBOOKS 1942–1951 (1965), and NOTEBOOKS 1951–1959 (2008)—serve as a vital intellectual diary, recording the evolution of his thoughts on art, war, and existence. Across his novels, essays, and plays, Camus consistently sought to affirm human dignity in a world without transcendence. His moral clarity, commitment to justice, and insistence on living with courage and compassion made him a powerful voice in mid-twentieth-century intellectual life.
