* Livy - Collected Works on Ancient Rome (15 books)

TITUS LIVIUS (59 BCE – 17 CE)
, known as Livy, was a preeminent Roman historian whose monumental work, AB URBE CONDITA LIBRI ("The History of Rome from Its Foundation") , serves as a foundational narrative of the city. Born in Patavium (modern-day Padua), he lived through a transformative period in Roman history marked by civil wars and the rise of Augustus as the first emperor.

Livy’s history documents Rome's history from its mythical origins through the reign of Augustus. It was an immense undertaking that originally comprised 142 books. Although much of the work has been lost to time, the surviving 35 books—along with fragments and epitomes—remain vital for understanding the Roman Republic.

His narrative style is celebrated for its rhetorical elegance and vivid storytelling, often blending historical fact with legend to highlight Roman virtue and morality. By highlighting exemplary figures such as virtuous leaders and self-sacrificing citizens, he sought to inspire his readers to uphold traditional Roman values like courage, discipline, and piety. At the same time, he warned against moral corruption, ambition, and internal discord, which he believed contributed to Rome’s crises.

While modern scholars often critique his lack of strict historical accuracy and his patriotic bias, Livy is still regarded as one of the three great Roman historians alongside Sallust and Tacitus, and his narrative remains invaluable for understanding how Romans of his time viewed their own history.
