In una notte di pioggia torrenziale, un'autostoppista - John Ryder, un uomo altissimo e dallo sguardo gelido - chiede un passaggio al giovane Jim Halsey, che sta attraversando il deserto texano per consegnare un auto in California. L'uomo salito a bordo è, però, un assassino ricercato in varie Contee e, facendo balenare davanti agli occhi del malcapitato un coltello, dichiara di aver già massacrato e squartato molta gente. Terrorizzato, Jim riesce fortunosamente a scaraventarlo sull'asfalto ma da quel momento si ritroverà continuamente sulle tracce orrende dei misfatti di questo criminale. La polizia arresta Jim convinta che sia lui l'autore dei delitti, ma il ragazzo, all'alba, trova aperta la porta della cella. E' stato John Ryder che sembra stranamente quasi offrirgli la libertà. Fuggito di prigione, Jim conosce Nash, una ragazza che subito crede alla sua innocenza, e i due si mettono in viaggio insieme e trovano rifugio in un motel. Ryder però riesce a scovarli anche lì. Finalmente il serial killer viene acciuffato e l'innocenza di Jim è accertata dal capitano Esteridge. Tuttavia, Ryder riesce a liberarsi e ad affrontare Jim in un'ultima sfida mortale.
