* Baruch Spinoza - Collected Philosophical Works (24 books)

BARUCH SPINOZA (1632–1677)
was a Dutch-Jewish philosopher whose work stands among the most radical and influential in early modern thought. His ideas on substance, mind–body parallelism, human freedom, and political authority challenged both religious orthodoxy and philosophical conventions of his time. Although his works were written in Latin (and some in Dutch) and often circulated only after his death, they helped lay intellectual foundations for the Enlightenment and modern secular liberalism.

At the heart of Spinoza’s thought is the striking claim that God and Nature are one and the same reality—“Deus sive Natura.” Instead of imagining a personal God standing outside the world, Spinoza argued that everything that exists is part of a single, infinite substance. Human minds and bodies are not separate kinds of things but two ways of understanding the same underlying reality. From this starting point, he developed powerful views about emotion, freedom, and political life, insisting that genuine freedom comes not from free will in a traditional sense but from understanding how we fit into the larger order of nature.

The TRACTATUS THEOLOGICO-POLITICUS (published anonymously in 1670) was one of the most controversial texts of the early modern period. A powerful defense of secular and constitutional government, it was also a critical historical reading of Scripture that anticipated modern Biblical criticism. The work has been called "one of the most significant events in European intellectual history", laying the groundwork for ideas about liberalism, secularism, and democracy.

Spinoza’s masterpiece, the ETHICS , was published posthumously in 1677 as part of the Latin Opera Posthuma. Written in a geometric style modeled on Euclid, it presents definitions, axioms, propositions, and proofs that build toward a sweeping account of reality and the path to human flourishing. During his lifetime he also published the PRINCIPLES OF CARTESIAN PHILOSOPHY (1663), a geometrical presentation of Descartes’s thought, as well as shorter writings and extensive correspondence which illuminate his evolving thought.

Two major modern translations of Spinoza's Collected Works merit special mention. The two-volume COLLECTED WORKS , translated and edited by Edwin Curley (1985—2016), provides extensive notes and careful renderings of key terms, making it particularly valuable for academic research and close textual study. In contrast, Samuel Shirley's translation of the COMPLETE WORKS (2002) contains less detailed scholarly apparatus but is a reliable and comprehensive collection of Spinoza’s writings.
