At the center of my interests, and foremost among them, is the man of our time, both oppressed and oppressor, prisoner of his own mechanisms, plagued by disturbing questions, and with increasingly apocalyptic prospects. I would like to denounce this condition in all its cruelty and fundamental injustice, without resorting to explicit chronicle. Hence my preference for symbolism and allegory, with specific cultural interests that I have attempted to convey in a synthesis in this film. (Luigi Di Gianni)
The rhythms of acting and music should fit into the “ecstatic” rhythms of the film with their rarefaction. I wanted to focus precisely on this rarefaction and on what I call “narrative ecstasy,” where the slow and insinuating rhythms of acting, the pauses, the silences, and the amazement should replace the naturalistic forms of ‘chatter’ and what we might call “false excitement.” In this sense, the collaboration of intelligent, sensitive, and “non-star” performers has been invaluable to me. And so the repetitive music, echoing memories or relics of vanished civilizations, tends to penetrate the rhythms of the film without being excessive or intrusive. (Luigi Di Gianni)
“Narrative ecstasy.” “False excitement.” These two terms, so antithetical, lies the whole dilemma of contemporary cinema. With extraordinary foresight, Di Gianni predicted this twenty-six years ago, when the first seeds of the deadly disease that would afflict contemporary cinema, namely overabundance and excitement, were appearing on the horizon, making it increasingly incapable of expressing itself in moving thought and aesthetic vision. Like other films produced in Italy by alternative “committed cinema” circuits, this one also rewrites the themes of fantasy sociology in the context of a severe parable on the risks of militarism and the authoritarian temptations of a society that has given up questioning itself, satisfied with the ephemeral and self-destructive well-being provided by capitalism.
