The late Finlay J Macdonald's popular classic trilogy comes to television. Gruth is Uachdar is a timeless rite-of-passage story about a young boy, Finlay, and his family's efforts to make a home in one of the most magnificent, and uncompromising, landscapes in Europe. The high mountains and white shell-sand beaches of Harris form a breathtaking natural setting for this bitter-sweet tale of boyhood. It is 1930. Finlay, four years old, nearly burns down his family's half-built new home. As the first episode unfolds, Finlay hears the history of the family, evicted during the Clearances. Too young to attend an engagement party in the new village, Finlay decides to evade his babysitter.

It is 1937 and Finlay travels to the port town of Tarbert to spend the holidays at his grandparents. The wonders of Tarbert and his grandparents' large house amaze Finlay. Unfortunately, he is not able to enjoy his own room for long. With the communions approaching, he must give it up to visitors from the neighbouring island of Lewis. However, he devises a scheme to get his own back.

Unbeknownst to everyone except Finlay, Hector has advertised for a wife. He gets several replies and secretly prepares to meet one of the respondents. Finlay attends school in Tarbert and he and his friends smoke cigarettes and chase girls as recruits to the territorial army are drilled along the street. War is declared and a troop ship appears in Tarbert to pick up the local volunteers.
