The Atmos remix sounds worse than I expected. The music on it sounds great, being sourced from separate magnetic stereo tapes, but dialogue sounds muffled and has a complementary bass boost on-top, for the usual (false) "old movie sound". Fortunately, the mono track sounds much better than I expected. It didn't undergo the same destructive filtering, has much less noise reduction, and no unnatural EQ.
The 5.1 tracks on HDTV/DVD are similar to Atmos, perhaps minimally worse. I don't have the old LDs to compare, either for the mono, or for the later stereo remix, but I would imagine they used inferior elements and sound worse as a result.
Really, I think it's a shame we didn't get a lighter and more natural stereo/3.0 remix here.
