In Gran Bretagna, in un laboratorio a Cambridge, un gruppo di animalisti (due uomini e una donna) si introduce di notte in un centro di ricerca con l'intento di liberare degli scimpanzé impiegati come cavie (una di queste, legata a una sedia, viene costretta a osservare su un monitor una serie di filmati di rabbia truculenta umana). Mentre si accingono ad aprire le gabbie, un medico ricercatore li scopre. Quest'ultimo, terrorizzato, confessa loro che agli animali è stato somministrato un inibitore altamente contagioso, una modifica del virus della rabbia. Gli attivisti non credono alle sue parole e liberano uno scimpanzé, il quale assale la donna mordendola; quest'ultima comincia immediatamente a vomitare sangue e a mostrare atteggiamenti simili a quelli del primate. Uno dei suoi amici tenta di soccorrerla. Nel tentativo entra anch'egli in contatto con il virus, che innesca in lui la stessa mutazione.
A group of animal rights activists infiltrate a laboratory in Cambridge which houses abnormally aggressive chimpanzees. One activist frees a chimpanzee despite being warned by a scientist that it is infected with a highly contagious virus; it attacks her, and within seconds of exposure, she succumbs to the virus. She immediately attacks the others, and the virus spreads rapidly across Great Britain, resulting in total societal collapse.
