Nathan Algren is an American hired to instruct the Japanese army in the ways of modern warfare -- in this lush epic set in the 1870s, which finds Algren learning to respect the samurai and the honorable principles that rule them. Nel 1876, Nathan Algren, ex capitano dell'esercito statunitense e veterano del Settimo Cavalleria che lavora pubblicizzando i fucili Winchester, viene avvicinato dal suo vecchio compagno d'armi Zeb, che gli fa rincontrare il colonnello Bagley, da cui riceve la proposta di addestrare l'esercito dell'imperatore giapponese Meiji allo scopo di combattere i samurai ribelli. Il capitano accetta la missione, che vede solo come un modo per far soldi e fuggire dall'atroce ricordo delle guerre indiane (probabilmente il massacro del Washita, che peraltro lo ha spinto all'alcolismo) e, arrivato in Giappone, trova un Paese nel pieno dello scontro tra la frenetica corsa alla modernità voluta dal giovane imperatore e una cultura millenaria legata alla filosofia del Bushido dei samurai.
In 1876, former U.S. Army Captain Nathan Algren, an alcoholic traumatized by the atrocities during the American Indian Wars, is approached by his former commanding officer, Colonel Bagley. Bagley asks him to train the newly created Imperial Japanese Army for a Japanese businessman, Matsue Omura, who intends to use the army to suppress a samurai rebellion against Japan's new emperor. Despite his hatred of Bagley, Algren takes the job for the money. His old friend, Sergeant Zebulon Gant, accompanies him. Upon arriving, Algren meets Simon Graham, a British translator knowledgeable about the samurai.
