Note : What many consider Fulci's best horror film is a southern gothic, Lovecraftian, eye-gouging, zombie extravaganza which is (probably) intentionally disorienting and confusing, and ends with the main characters literally lost in Hell. It's the second of the three Fulci gates of hell films, after City of the Living Dead, and before The House by the Cemetery, and definitely the best of those three, although they all have their charms. The quite good cast includes Catriona MacColl, David Warbeck, Cinzia Monreale, Antoine Saint-John, Veronica Lazăr, Al Cliver, and Michele Mirabella.

In 1927, an artist in a New Orleans hotel is set upon by a lynch mob, accused of witchcraft, and brutally murdered in the hotel's basement. In voiceover, a woman reads from the Book of Eibon, prophecizing that one of the seven gates of hell will open. In 1981, NYC transplant Liza Merrill has inherited the hotel and is renovating it. A worker glimpses a face through a window and falls off the scaffolding he's standing on, and Dr. McCabe takes him to the hospital. The reception bell for room 36 keeps ringing on its own, but Liza dismisses it as a malfunction. When a plumber comes in to check on the lack of running water, he opens a wall in the half-flooded basement and accidentally unleashes something undead which kills him after doing unpleasant things to his eyes. A maid discovers the plumber's mutilated corpse, along with the ancient body of the artist killed in the beginning, and both bodies are taken to the hospital. Liza encounters a blind woman named Emily, who warns her to abandon her plans of reopening the hotel and to go back to New York, but Liza refuses. Emily tells her about the dead artist and his painting, which she says was part of a seance, that his death created a curse upon the land, and warns her not to enter room 36. Liza, however, immediately goes to the room, where she sees a vision of the artist crucified on the wall, and finds the Book of Eibon, but when she returns with Dr. McCabe soon after, both are gone. As more people related to the hotel are killed in nasty ways, McCabe finds the Book of Eibon and discovers the hotel is one of the gates to hell...

This is a very solid 4k remaster from Grindhouse Releasing, with excellent color and contrast, tight grain, and also quite clean. The multiple sound tracks are also good, including two 5.1 remasters, one done by the original composer, two languages in mono, and four commentary tracks, including at least one I think is brand new. A complete package.
