Harrison Lloyd is a Pulitzer-winning photojournalist. His wife and family are making it hard for him to keep his mind on his work when he's in a war zone, and he wants to change jobs to something less stressful. Octobre 1991, Harrison Lloyd, (David Strathairn ; L.A. Confidential), reporter-photographe célèbre pour Newsweek, est envoyé en Yougoslavie pour "couvrir les débuts d'un conflit mineur". Personne, à cette époque, ne comprend encore cette guerre. Sarah (Andie MacDowell ; Quatre mariages et un enterrement), sa femme, mère de deux enfants, lui fait promettre de revenir pour l'anniversaire de son fils.
Il promet, part, tarde à rentrer et est porté disparu aux environs de Osijiek, non loin de Vukovar, dans le nord de la Croatie. Quelques jours plus tard, l'Associated Press annonce sa mort.
Pour Sarah, le monde s'écroule, mais elle refuse de croire au décès de son époux. Elle part alors à sa recherche, flanquée de trois photographes, dont Kyle (Adrien Brody ; La ligne rouge), le seul qui soit un tantinet lucide dans l'expédition, et Stevenson (Brendan Gleeson ; The General), un soldat usé, instable, mais humain.
Harrison's Flowers constitue avant tout un devoir de mémoire. Pour cette histoire d'amour sur fond de guerre en Croatie, le réalisateur Elie Chouraqui (Paroles et musique) est épaulé par une pléiade de talents internationaux : Andie MacDowell, Adrien Brody, Elias Koteas (Un élève doué), Brendan Gleeson, David Strathairn (L.A. Confidential).
La journaliste et photographe Isabel Ellsen, une des rares pendant le conflit à avoir pénétré l'enceinte bombardée de Vukovar, a raconté son expérience dans Le diable a l'avantage et en a aussi nourri le scénario écrit par Elie Chouraqui et Didier Le Pêcheur.
Harrison's Flowers a été présenté en avant-première mondiale au Prix Bayeux des Correspondants de guerre.
