Wanneer de tiener Nicholas Barclay (Grondin) na drie jaar vermist geweest te zijn, plotseling weer opduikt, wordt hij door zÆn zus met open armen en tranende ogen verwelkomd. Zijn moeder (Barkin) neemt zijn hand zonder hem ook maar aan te kijken. Maar niemand vraagt zich af of hij wel is wie hij beweert te zijn, behalve een no-nonsense FBI-agente, Nancy (Janssen). Zij heeft al snel door dat de puzzelstukjes niet passen en achterhaalt de waarheid: Nicholas Barclay is een bedrieger. Maar waarom weigeren de Barclays zo halsstarrig om de FBI tests te laten uitvoeren die zijn identiteit kunnen bevestigen? Wie is deze bedrieger?
