Op de ochtend van 30 juni 1860, wordt het lichaam van de driejarige Saville Kent gevonden, brutaal vermoord en verborgen onder een bediendenterrein, op de gronden van het elegante Road Hill House, aan de rand van het slaperige stadje Somerset. Terwijl de lokale politie ijvert om de misdaad op te lossen, wordt de zaak een nationaal schandaal en op bevel van de minister van binnenlandse zaken, wordt inspecteur Jonathan 'Jack' Whicher, de zogenaamde 'Prins der Speurders' van de nieuw opgerichte Scotland Yard-afdeling, naar het platteland gezonden om de moordenaar te identificeren en de orde te herstellen.
